Nous Somme’s Belge!

May 6 and 7: From Maastricht south into Belgium. The best stop along the way was the town of Durbuy. It had a bit of a Whistler vibe, tourist focussed with many upscale restaurants and shops, but still the narrow cobbled streets and stone buildings.

From Durbuy southward. We deliberately took small roads, like single track, part of the way, settling into a nice green campground at Tenneville for the night

Saturday was a preplanned day at Libramont-Chavigny where Bill had spotted an Auto Bourse, aka a market for classic car parts, accessories, and some classic cars on view. Pat had a good day of reading in the van.

Our son, Jeremy, meanwhile bicycled 60kms south from Mohiville where he is currently living, to meet up with us early afternoon. Bill showed Jer around the Bourse for a while, then we set off back toward Mohiville. Along the way we dropped by a typical Belgian chateau for a look around, and then to Jeremy’s home with Fachon and her 9 yr old son.

They are in the village of Mohiville, in an apartment in a converted barn. A very cosy little place in a rural village; delightful.

May8: Jeremy takes us on a tour of the region, as Fanchon is working today. We stopped at a little village where a crowd of cars were parked. It turned out to be a confirmation service in the ancient church.

Then on to Verves and a walk through Vevres Castle; one of the better restorations in the region.

Onwards to Dinant, a touristy town on the banks of the Meuse for lunch. Dinant is famous for being the home of Adolph Sax of phone phame.
And last, but not least, a 10 km bike ride along an old rail track into the town of Rochfort. Nice having Jeremy to be able to ride back to fetch the van while we relaxed with a drink at a cafe.

  2. How wonderful to visit NW Europe again via you two. The secondary roads are indeed the best and reveal the most interesting villages.
